Three Numbers Called Sales – Till vs Bank Reconciliation

On a day with 1,000.00 of real sales the till reports 1,250.00, the bank receives 1,219.50 and the books record 1,000.00 — and all three are correct. The till adds 130.00 of sales tax owed onward and 120.00 of tips owed to staff: 250.00 that was never the business's money, and 25% of apparent 'sales' that does not exist. The bank is short of the till by exactly the processing fee, 30.50, plus any cash that did not get deposited — that is the entire difference, so once it is named there is no missing money to look for. And the fee is two parts, not one percentage: 2.65% of card takings is 26.50, but forty transactions at ten cents adds 4.00 more, making the effective rate 3.05% rather than the headline 2.65%. On a small average ticket the fixed part is the larger half, and it is the half that never appears in a rate comparison.

Cafe and small restaurant operators reconciling a POS export against a bank statement, and the bookkeepers who get asked where the money went.

How it works

  1. Enter your tax rate and both parts of your processing fee.
  2. Add one row per day: net sales, tips, card takings, transaction count and the cash you actually banked.
  3. Read the three figures side by side and check which one you have been quoting.
  4. Check the gap against fees and unbanked cash — if it matches, nothing is missing.

What you gain

  • Shows you the three different numbers a business calls 'sales' — the till, the bank, and revenue — side by side, and names exactly why they don't match so you stop hunting for money that was never missing.

Frequently asked questions

What does this tool actually tell me about my sales numbers?

It shows three separate figures that are often all called 'sales' – what your till reported, what your bank actually received, and what your true revenue was after removing tax, tips, and processing fees – so you can see exactly which number you're quoting and why they differ.

Is my financial data safe with this product?

Yes, all data you enter is processed locally in your browser and is never sent to our servers. Nothing is stored externally, and you can clear your entries at any time by refreshing the page.

Does this tool handle cash shortages or missing money?

No, it only reconciles the gap between till and bank as processing fees plus unbanked cash. If your gap doesn't match those two components, it won't identify other causes – it simply shows the difference so you know it's not explained by fees or cash handling.
